Hard Hats
Hard Hats — ANSI Type I and Type II Safety Helmets for Head Impact Protection
Hard hats are the foundational head protection device in construction, manufacturing, utilities, mining, and any industry where workers face risk of head injury from falling objects, striking fixed overhead structures, or electrical contact with energized conductors. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.100 requires head protection for all employees in areas where there is possible danger of head injury from impact, falling or flying objects, or electrical shock and burns. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 establishes the performance requirements for industrial head protection in the United States, specifying two types — Type I for top impact protection and Type II for both top and lateral impact protection — and three classes for electrical insulation performance.
Type I hard hats protect against impacts and penetrations to the top of the helmet and provide electrical protection as rated. Type I is the most common configuration for construction and general industry where overhead falling object risk predominates. Type II hard hats add lateral impact and penetration protection for the sides of the head, providing broader coverage for environments where the worker can be struck by objects approaching from the sides as well as from above, such as in tight utility corridor work, underground environments, and applications where the worker frequently works in confined or enclosed spaces. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type II requirements are significantly more demanding than Type I, and Type II helmets are recommended by OSHA for many construction and utility applications where lateral hazards are present.
Electrical performance classes define the hard hat's insulation characteristics: Class E (Electrical) hard hats are rated for 20,000 volts phase-to-phase, making them appropriate for electrical utility work and applications near high-voltage energized systems. Class G (General) hard hats are rated for 2,200 volts, providing basic electrical insulation for general construction where low-voltage contact risk may be present. Class C (Conductive) hard hats provide no electrical insulation and must never be used where electrical contact risk exists — Class C is reserved for environments where electrical contact is not a hazard and where metal or conductive materials are required for other reasons. Always select the class appropriate to the electrical hazards present in the work environment.
Hard hat suspension systems — the internal web structure that holds the shell away from the head — are critical to impact performance, as the space between the shell and the head allows the shell to deform and absorb impact energy before it reaches the skull. Six-point and eight-point suspension systems distribute impact forces more evenly across the head than four-point systems. Ratchet adjustments for quick one-hand sizing adjustment are standard on modern hard hats, replacing the older pinlock headband adjustment that required two hands and was slower to adjust when wearing gloves. Vented hard hat shells with airflow channels improve comfort in hot environments but must still meet all impact performance requirements of the rated class — ventilation cannot compromise electrical insulation or impact shell integrity.
Hard hat accessories — including ear muff clips for integrated hearing protection, faceshield brackets, winter liner attachments, and reflective decals — extend hard hat functionality without requiring a separate headgear assembly. Full brim hard hats provide additional sun protection for the neck, face, and ears that front-brim cap style hard hats do not cover. Our hard hat collection includes Type I and Type II models in Class E, G, and C ratings, in standard 6-point suspension and premium 8-point suspension configurations, with a full range of accessories for customizing head protection to specific work environment requirements.
