Motion Sensors

Motion sensors detect movement within a defined space and trigger alerts, alarms, or automated responses — serving as a core component of both home security systems and smart home automation. Passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors detect the heat signature of moving bodies, offering reliable detection with extremely low false-alarm rates compared to older microwave or ultrasonic technologies. WC Safety carries standalone motion sensors, alarm-compatible sensors, and smart home motion detectors from Ring, SimpliSafe, Honeywell, and Lutron for residential and commercial applications.

Detection range and angle determine coverage area per sensor. Standard PIR motion sensors detect movement within a 90-degree horizontal arc to a distance of approximately 30 feet — sufficient for covering a single room of average size. Wide-angle sensors with 110 to 180-degree horizontal coverage reduce the number of units needed in large open spaces. For stairways and narrow corridors, curtain-beam sensors detect only vertical movement across a narrow horizontal plane — ideal for detecting passage through a specific point without generating false alerts from activity in adjacent spaces.

Pet immunity technology is an important feature for households with animals. Standard PIR sensors trigger on any warm-moving body above floor level — including pets. Pet-immune or pet-tolerant sensors use dual-element PIR technology combined with sensitivity adjustments that ignore heat signatures below a specific size threshold, typically calibrated to ignore movement from animals under 40, 55, or 80 pounds depending on the model. For homes with large dogs, even pet-immune sensors require careful mounting height and angle adjustment to avoid false activations.

Wireless battery-powered sensors integrate into monitored alarm systems without any wiring, making them ideal for retrofitting existing homes and rental properties where wall penetrations are undesirable. Most wireless sensors communicate via encrypted Z-Wave, Zigbee, or proprietary RF protocols with ranges up to 100 feet from the hub. Battery life typically ranges from 2 to 5 years on CR123A or AA cells depending on activation frequency. Low-battery alerts are sent via the system hub before the battery fails completely.

Smart home motion sensors go beyond alarm triggering to enable automated lighting, climate control, and presence-based device management. A motion sensor near an entry can automatically turn on lights as you enter, turn them off after a specified delay with no movement, and log entry times for household presence tracking. Integration with voice assistants and smart home platforms allows motion sensor events to trigger complex automation routines — adjusting thermostat settings when the first person arrives home, or locking doors and turning off entertainment systems when no motion is detected for a set period.

Outdoor motion sensors provide perimeter monitoring and can trigger floodlights, cameras, and audible alerts when activity is detected at property boundaries. Outdoor sensors must be rated for the temperature extremes and precipitation exposure of your climate. Look for IP65 or IP67 weatherproof ratings and operating temperature ranges that match your region. Dual-technology outdoor sensors combining PIR with microwave detection significantly reduce false alarms from swaying vegetation while maintaining detection sensitivity for human-sized movement.

WC Safety stocks both alarm system-compatible motion sensors and standalone smart home motion detectors in indoor and outdoor configurations.
