Workplace PPE — Complete Personal Protective Equipment for Industrial Environments

Personal protective equipment is the last line of defense in OSHA's hierarchy of hazard controls, deployed when engineering controls and administrative measures cannot fully eliminate worker exposure to hazardous conditions. Workplace PPE encompasses every category of equipment worn or carried by individual workers to protect against physical, chemical, biological, or ergonomic hazards: head protection, eye and face protection, hearing protection, respiratory protection, hand protection, foot protection, body protection, and fall protection. This collection brings together the most trusted workplace PPE products across all of these categories, providing safety managers and procurement specialists with a one-stop resource for outfitting their workforce with compliant, quality protection.

Selecting workplace PPE requires a systematic approach that begins with a workplace hazard assessment — a formal evaluation of the tasks workers perform and the hazards those tasks present. OSHA requires hazard assessments under multiple standards including 29 CFR 1910.132 (general PPE requirements), which mandates that employers assess the workplace for hazards that require the use of PPE and certify that assessment in writing. The hazard assessment drives PPE selection, ensuring that the specific protection offered by chosen equipment matches the actual hazards workers face rather than providing a generalized level of protection that may be inadequate for specific tasks.

Head protection requirements are triggered by exposure to falling objects, striking hazards from low clearances, electrical hazards, or any combination of these. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 hard hats rated Type II Class E provide the broadest coverage for mixed construction and electrical environments. Eye and face protection selection depends on whether hazards include impact, chemical splash, dust, welding radiation, or laser exposure. ANSI Z87.1 certified safety glasses cover impact and dust; chemical goggles add sealed protection against splash; face shields add coverage for the full facial area.

Hearing protection is required in areas where noise exposures reach or exceed 85 dBA TWA, and the selected protectors must reduce worker exposure to below the 90 dBA PEL. Dual protection — wearing both earplugs and earmuffs — is required for exposures above 100 dBA where single protectors may be insufficient to achieve adequate attenuation. Respiratory protection selection requires a written respiratory protection program, hazard assessment, medical evaluation, fit testing, and cartridge change schedule under OSHA 1910.134. The correct respirator type and cartridge configuration must be matched to the specific contaminants present and their air concentrations.

Hand protection is among the most commonly misapplied categories of PPE. The variety of hazards hands face — cuts, punctures, abrasion, chemical exposure, heat, cold, electrical shock — means that no single glove design provides optimal protection for all tasks. A cut-resistant glove appropriate for metal handling may be wholly inadequate for chemical exposure. Selection guides based on ANSI/ISEA 105 cut resistance levels, EN 388 mechanical protection ratings, and chemical resistance permeation data help safety professionals match gloves to the specific hazards of each task.

Safety footwear selection covers ASTM F2413 ratings for impact and compression resistance, electrical hazard protection, puncture resistance, and slip resistance. Composite toe and steel toe boots both meet impact and compression standards but offer different trade-offs: steel toe provides higher impact resistance at equivalent weight while composite toe eliminates metal conductivity for electrical hazard environments and avoids triggering metal detectors in controlled facilities.

Fall protection, body protection, and specialized PPE categories round out a comprehensive workplace PPE program.
